ISKANDAR PUTERI, 16 April 2016 – GBS ISKANDAR was launched today, placing Iskandar Puteri as the newest Global Business Services (GBS) Hub in Southeast Asia.
GBS ISKANDAR is a specialised programme developed in collaboration with the Federal Government and the Johor State Government to facilitate local and foreign companies in setting up their Global Business Services Operations in Iskandar Puteri.
The launch of GBS ISKANDAR will help boost investments and the creation of highvalue and knowledge-based employment opportunities for Johor. GBS ISKANDAR is earmarked to generate RM 6.5 billion of investment and create 13,949 high-value and knowledge-based jobs by 2020.
The GBS ISKANDAR programme is managed by i2M Ventures Sdn Bhd (i2M), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad. In its initial phase, i2M has already created 2,300 high value jobs in Iskandar Puteri.
i2M has been working with the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) to establish Iskandar Puteri as a world-class Business Services Hub, under the existing Entry Point Project (EPP) 2 within the Business Services National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
Iskandar Puteri’s strategic location, nearshore to Singapore, as well as its costcompetitiveness, language capabilities and highly-skilled talent pool make it an ideal business services hub for Multinational Companies (MNCs) and Regional Headquarters (RHQs) located in Singapore. Furthermore, a main competitive advantage of Iskandar Puteri, Johor and Malaysia is its multi-racial talent pool which is ideal for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services. Iskandar Puteri is a sweet spot location which allows MNCs and RHQs to become highly effective – strategically located to take advantage of the lucrative and growing Southeast Asian market, while at the same time minimising GBS-related operations costs. Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed who officiated the launch of GBS ISKANDAR at Pinewoods Studio, Iskandar Puteri said: “Through the GBS ISKANDAR programme, qualified companies will be able to enjoy efficient and expert facilitation to meet their GBS location requirements, covering key areas such as talent, infrastructure, livability and incentives.”
He added, “Through the collaborative efforts of i2M and its partners, I am very optimistic that Iskandar Puteri will continue to attract a stable inflow of investments with more upcoming projects that will continue to benefit the local community.” Mr. Zulfiqar Zainuddin, Managing Director of i2M commented “The launch of Iskandar Puteri as the GBS Hub in the region is testament to the strategic importance of Iskandar for Malaysia. It is an exciting moment for i2M, as we witness the beginning of greater development for Iskandar Puteri. The pace of growth, employment opportunities and the benefits to the community that this venture provides is truly unprecedented.”
Managing a sustainable availability of talent is one of the key factors that would attract GBS activities into the region. The GBS ISKANDAR Campus Connect Initiative is a partnership between Industry players and Academia facilitated by i2M. This collaboration consists of a 6-month Oracle Training and certification programme by Vision Technology Consulting (VTC) for selected students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)’s Faculty of Computing. The training will be conducted via classroom and on-the-job Oracle training that will eventually increase these students’ employability.
“Our vision is to grow Iskandar Puteri to become the sought after GBS Hub, seeing the abundant prospects available in terms of its talent, livability and infrastructural ecosystem.” Zulfiqar concluded.
